The Ultimate in Urban Gardening: Aerogarden

So I’ve been kind of bummed since I moved to Oakland for the simple fact that we no longer have a patio or any sort of outside area in which to garden.  Luckily, I got a few Aerogardens as gifts! (Thanks, Dad!)

I haven’t blogged in what seems like years, but I’ve decided that I will give it another go now that I have a “garden” to write about.

Ahh… the Aerogarden.  What a fine piece of home appliance.  The thing was stupidly simple to put together (in fact, I bet you’d be able to figure it out even without instructions).  Put the bulbs in, attach the lamp arm to the thingee and then the thingee to the base, you get the idea.  Then fill it with water, place the seed pods in the holes, and add the starting nutrients.  Seriously, that’s it?!  Pretty gosh darned fool proof if you ask me.  When they say that no green thumb is required, they aren’t messing around!

Here are some lovely photos of the setup process (sorry they’re crappy quality; I used my iPhone because my actual camera is out of batteries at the moment)

The seed pods in the Aerogarden!  I have an Oregano, dill, basil, and 3 romaine lettuce.  My turtles are going to be -so happy- when they get to eat fresh lettuce!

Adding the starting nutrients… /\

Let there be light!

The second Aerogarden.  This one has red and yellow cherry tomatoes!

And there they are!

Yes, they are in our bathroom.  Our bathroom is huge though (the only thing big about this apartment!) so they’re far away from any offending materials that bathrooms are notorious for.  Now we wait!  The lights are on timers so I’m pretty sure all I have to do is add water and nutrients every once in a while, and prune the plants.  The first seedlings should start sprouting in 1-3 days.  Stay tuned for updates!

Do any of my blog readers (all 2 of you) have indoor gardens?  If so, I’d love to hear about them!
